My impressions after a few days spent in Kosovo, for an international mission in support of their future census. The local people are friendly and willing to live a “normal” life, but everybody knows that after the 10th of December (when the government led by the Albanian majority might proclaim Kosovo’s unilateral independence) the situation between the different ethnic groups could become again very dangerous. Even if this crucial date will someway be dealt with, Kosovo will have very difficult economic problems because the long standing international missions operating in the country have not started a development mechanism. As many others, I think that the only solution can come from a strong European action replacing the United nations in leading Kosovo out of the crisis. But without a Ue’s common vision and willingness to pay the costs of development in exchange for peace the Balkan situation will remain a mess.
